Fallacy: Argument from adverse consequences
Type of Fallacy:
Argument from adverse consequences
Definition:
Saying that because of the implications of a statement being true would create negative results, it must not be true.
Example:
“If we allow people to believe the evolutionist doctrine that they are nothing but animals, human civilization will be destroyed in a tidal wave of immorality.”
I really hope this is rationalwiki overstatement. If it’s not, the idea that I will be ‘allowed” to believe anything, especially to do with science, in this country is way beyond the pale. A similar argument is the “if gays can marry traditional marriage is doomed.” Which of course it isn’t. Or this new one from a nutjob named Tony Perkins. If gay rights and marriage become acceptable the gays will start rounding up the Christians and put them in concentration camps.
There is so much bullshit out there that harks back to the Nazi era. Frankly it’s insulting to the real victims of the most recent holocaust. Jews, gypsies, communists, socialists, the opposition, freedom fighters and gays. I’m coming around to the idea that most of these so called fundie leaders are narcissistic psychopaths. For them everything in the world truly is all about them and they truly don’t care about anyone else.
Either that, or they truly don't believe the bile they're spewing but are modern day Elmer Gantries. In it for the power and the money; not caring what they do to get it. Frankly I'm not sure which is worse.
