Salt Creek Falls up Highway 58 on the way to Willamette Pass. Glaciers carved the vally then lava flows partially filled the canyon. The water cascades over a 280 or so foot drop.
John Denver covered this beautiful song. Enjoy while I figuar out where in the sam hill I am going and how I am going to get there. Geeze. Trying to read geology is like learninga whole new language. Especially since the only real class I had was Earth Space Science back in the ninth grade. In 1964.
The Moon landings were in the future. The Voyager missions were still pretty much on the drawing board. So was Carl Sagan's Cosmos.
The first deep cores into what lies beneath the surface of the earth were being drilled. Scientists were beginning to admit that
Alfred Wegener wasn't quite at crazy as they thought with his theory that the Earth is a dynamic, always changing planet. that the continents do indeed move. Continental drift became
Plate Tectonics and we finally had answers to some questions some Oregonians had asked off and on. Questions like "where did all those volcanoes come from and are they still active." Mt. Saint Helens answerred that question a few years later. Anyway a beautiful song. With time and patience flowers do indeed work their magic on stones. Even basalts laid down millions of years ago.
THE FLOWER THAT SHATTERED THE STONE
The Earth is our mother just
turning around
With her trees in the forest and roots underground
Our father above us whose sigh is the wind
Paint us a rainbow without any end
As the river runs freely the mountain does rise
Let me touch with my fingers and see with my eyes
In the hearts of the children of pure love still grows
Like a bright star in heaven that lights our way home
Like the flower that shattered the stone
Sparrows find freedom beholding the sun
In the infinite beauty we’re all joined in one
I reach out before me and look to the sky
Then I hear someone whisper. It’s something passing by.
As the river runs freely the
mountain does rise
Let me touch with my fingers and see with my eyes
In the hearts of the children of pure love still roams
Like a bright star in heaven that lights our way home
Like the flower that shattered the stone
Like a bright star in heaven that lights our way home
Like the flower that shattered the stone
