THE GOLDEN RULE

Carl left us far to soon. He was a great communicator. He was able to teach without "talking down" to his audience. And the first Cosmos in the seventies took on the problem of climate change and the effects of a nuclear winter.

His explantion of the effects of nuclear weapons used in a probable exchange was simple. Take all the weapons used over six years in WWII and explode them all over one afternoon. Not much left after that.

By the way, this is not just Christianity. The Golden Rule was uttered by Rabbi Hillel before Jesus, and by the Buddha centuries before Rabbi Hillel. It is involved in many different religions. But for the moment let’s talk about Christianity. It seems to me that the admonishment to love our enemy must be something central to Christianity; it’s that strong statement of the Golden Rule that sets Christianity apart. There were no qualifying phrases that said, “Love your enemy unless you really don’t like him.” It says love your enemy. No ifs, ands, or buts. Now, political nonviolence has worked wonders in our time. Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. achieved extraordinary, and for many people counterintuitive, victories."

STILL WAITING

Over fifty years sisnce that fatal day in Memphis and we're still waiting. Too many sitting out elections because there isn't a perfect candidate on the ballot. Too many who can vote sitting elections out whle too many who can vote are shut out. Every election is important from the school boards and county commissioners to the White House and Congress.
